Spiritual Vandalism

“My mother died when I was 11.  She had cancer.  I don’t know…I probably had seven or eight foster homes but they never included me in their Mother’s Day celebrations.”  My heart broke as this man whom I have known for 16 years shared this with me today.  I never knew this about him.  And my guess is that few people do.  He held back tears as he spoke of how blessed he was that the Lord found him.  “Because I was lost man!” he said.

I believe in the church we have lost sight of how important we are to the plans of God.  The Lord has done so much to reveal His glory to the world.  His efforts prove that He wants no one to spend eternity in Hell.  The glory of creation points to a great Designer, a great Creator, not a random explosion that just happened to propel everything into the perfect place.  It is clear from creation that there is a Master Planner, a God for sure.

Human relationships have been arranged to reveal the nature of His love and the relationship He desires from us.  Husband and wife, Father and child, even Mother and child…have all been orchestrated to make known the character of God and His desire for us.  And just in case we are not sure that this is what God has done to make Himself known, the Word of God through the Holy Spirit has verified this to us.

  • Romans 1: He tells us that His invisible qualities have always been seen through the glory of His creation.
  • Matthew 6: We are taught that if He clothes the grass of earth with splendor greater than that of Solomon, how much more will He take care of us. To go further, He says that if the birds who do not gather nor store up food, but each day must find food for the day are taken care of by His providence, how much more will He take care of His children.
  • Ephesians 5: We learn here that the nature of the passion and love between a husband and wife is to mirror the passion we have for the Lord and the passion He has for us. He gave us His life for His bride.
  • Matthew 7: Drawing upon our love for our own children, He reminds us that in our most imperfect state, we love our children dearly therefore how much more does He love being that He is not corrupted by sin and selfishness. If we, who are evil compared to His holiness want to give good gifts to our children, how much more does our Father in Heaven want to give us a wonderful life.

We could go throughout Scripture and see the grandiose signs the Lord has put up that the world might see Him clearly.  Those of us who know Him know that if the world could just see Him clearly and become acquainted with His character, the overwhelming love of our Lord would draw them to Himself.

There is a sign that I pass often.  It is a stop sign.  I know this from the shape, but the red color and the word ‘STOP’ has been covered with graffiti.  Church, the world has covered these great signs from God with graffiti.  Our children are being taught that Creation was an accident, some strange phenomena that occurred millions of years ago-it is Hell’s spray-paint.  They are being taught that there is no Creator; there is no Master Designer, just a random explosion.  Not only this, but like my friend, the enemy has tagged God’s relationship signs to the point that when He calls Himself ‘Father’ or ‘Mother,’ it elicits negativity rather than warmth and compassion.  The destruction of the family has covered the beautiful signs of love the Lord left for the entire world to see.  The broken families, abusive homes, abandoned children-graffiti from Hell.

This is where the church comes in.  As we live according to the Word of God and share the teachings of Christ, we wash over the demonic vandalism that people might see God again.  Without the church being the church; living like the church; teaching the beliefs of the church, it is hard for the world to see the signs.  We must be the love of Jesus Christ to the people around us.  We must share the teachings of Christ with those who will listen.  The spray-paint thins, running down revealing the reflective character of God once again.  How important are you?  How important is the church?  Without us…no one can read the signs.  Without you, someone in your little world may never read the sign that says God is Love!
